[ Garden & Landscape ] Open Question : How often should I water this plant?

I've had this plant for about a week now. I believe it is a coleus plant
based on searching the description, but I can't be sure. It has red leaves
that are very soft and fuzzy when you touch them, they kind of feel like
velour fabric. I've been watering it every two days or so whenever the
soil looks like it's really dried out, but already I can see it dying. How
often should I water this plant. Also what size pot should I put it in,
the plant itself is probably 12 inches tall and has large leaves about 1
1/2 to 2 inches on the top, and some smaller ones at the bottom. It is
still in the small green pot that the people who sell them keep them in
and I know it can't stay in there, the roots are coming out of the holes
in the bottom. I have many pots of varying size laying around, I just
haven't gotten around to buying soil.
